The "bottled lightning" picture is my favorite:
It was made by subjecting glass to a strong electrical current. A similar fractal shown in the article was made by putting an electric current through nails stuck in a wet plank, which burns fractal-like branching marks in the wood. I'm definitely going to try that one if I can get my hands on the right tools.
